UPDATE—March 4, 2:00 p.m. ET: After Nielsen’s fast national ratings on Monday showed the Oscars dip to 18.1 million viewers, Disney and Nielsen announced on Tuesday that final ratings show the 97th Academy Awards grew to 19.69 million viewers.

Disney noted the discrepancy came down to evolving viewing patterns leading to a greater difference between fast national ratings and final reporting. According to the final numbers, the 97th Oscars delivered a five-year high in total viewers and the Adults 18-49 demo, which reached a 4.54 rating and was driven by mobile and PC viewing by younger viewers.
