Tools of the Trade is a feature to highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Kaleeta McDade, global chief experience design officer at VML.

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

I get so excited being able to write things down, I have an elaborate system of planners, weekly visual aids, and white board calendars in my home.

When many people have gone more digital, I’ve doubled down on my to-do list. There is something so very cathartic being able to illustratively take notes, or to cross something off. I also use a timer for productivity.

Why is it your favorite?

My handwriting is a special level of hieroglyphics, so I am never concerned that trade secrets will get out. I like to time block my days, so I can get the most protected creativity.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

Instagram always markets to me, and the amount of impulse shopping goes up exponentially. They really play on main character energy, with the level of personalization.

How does it help you be successful?

I’m a visual person who processes by writing. Analog will always hold a place in my heart.

Does it have sentimental value?

Not at this time, but love the portability.

Do you think your tool could go TikTok viral? Why or why not?

Lol, probably not.
